Bots and Figma: What They Can And Cannot Touch

Press undo after a bot has changed your Figma file and nothing happens. In a multiplayer editor the undo stack is per person: it walks back your actions, in your session, in the order you took them. It does not know about anybody else in the file, and to Figma the bot is somebody else.

That one detail decides most of what follows. The reflex everyone relies on when a change goes wrong is unavailable, so the only thing that can reverse a bot's work is version history, and restoring from version history brings the whole file back to a moment rather than undoing one action inside it. Everything else you did in the meantime comes back with it.

So the question with a design file is not which tasks a bot is good at. That is a workflow question, and it is covered in the designer's playbook for production work and slop control. This article is about the file format itself: which objects propagate, which operations are one-way, and which door the bot comes through, because those three things set the ceiling on how bad a bad run can be.

Learn the two objects that decide how far a mistake travels

Figma has one relationship that matters more than every other feature in the product. A main component is a definition. An instance is a live reference to that definition, and it inherits everything the definition says until something overrides it locally.

Edit an instance and the change is local. It becomes an override, stored on that instance, and no other instance moves. Edit the main component and the change is not local at all: it reaches every instance in that file immediately, and every instance in every other file that consumes the library, on that file's next accepted update.

That asymmetry is the entire risk model. The same operation, performed on two objects that look almost identical on the canvas, has a blast radius of one frame or a blast radius of your whole product.

Read the bottom row twice. Deleting a component does not visibly break the screens that use it, which is why it is the mistake that survives review.

Understand that detaching destroys a relationship, not a layer

Detaching an instance is the operation people underestimate most, because nothing about the canvas changes. The frame is still there. The pixels are identical. Every layer is where it was.

What is gone is the link. A detached instance is an ordinary frame, and ordinary frames do not receive library updates. There is no reattach that restores what was lost: you can swap in a fresh instance and rebuild the overrides by hand, but the original relationship is not recoverable except by rolling the file back.

The damage is therefore delayed and quiet. The screen looks correct today. It looks correct next week. It looks wrong the month you change the button radius across the system and one screen keeps the old one, because that screen stopped listening in March and nobody noticed. Multiply that by a bot detaching whatever resisted its edit, run weekly, and you get a design system that is slowly becoming a folder of pictures.

Write the prohibition as the operation, not the intent. The bot never detaches an instance, and if an edit cannot be made without detaching, the correct outcome is a report saying which instance and why, not a workaround.

Rename nothing inside a main component, because overrides are matched by name

Here is the sharpest example of a task that sounds like housekeeping and behaves like demolition.

Overrides are stored on instances and reconnected to the main component by matching layers, and that matching leans on layer names and structure. Rename the layers inside a main component, or restructure them, and instances can lose the overrides that were attached to the old shape. Component property names behave the same way: the property is the contract between the definition and every instance, so renaming a property can break the instances that were setting it.

Every row is a reasonable request from someone who has never had to repair the result. None of them is a bot job. If your library genuinely needs a naming pass, that is an afternoon with a person watching the instances, on a branch, with a named version saved first.

Treat publishing as the moment the blast radius leaves the building

A library change does not propagate the instant it is made. Publishing pushes the update, and each consuming file has to accept it before anything moves in that file.

People read that as a safety net and it is not one. It is a delay. Consuming files accept updates in a batch, usually without reading them, usually by whoever opens the file first on Monday. The review that could have caught the problem happens before publish or it does not happen.

Which gives you the clean rule: the bot never publishes. Not with approval, not with a confirmation step, not as the last action of an otherwise sensible job. Publishing is the operation that converts a mistake in one file into a mistake in everyone's files, and it is one click for a human who has actually looked at the diff.

The catalog says the same thing on a neighbouring surface. Brand Deck Keeper audits customer-facing decks against the live price book and never edits the master deck, its components, or the shared library, handing back paste-ready fixes instead. Deck Localizer rebuilds a deck for a new market by producing a separate copy, never touching the master. In both cases the output is a proposal in a place that does not propagate.

Give the bot a branch, because a branch is the review gate the file has

Where your plan includes branching, this is the structural answer, and it is better than any charter clause because it changes what the bot is able to reach rather than what it is told.

A branch is a copy of the file with its own history. The bot works there, you review the branch, and merging shows you a diff of what changed before anything lands in the file everyone else uses. That is the design tool's version of a pull request, and it converts "check the bot's work" from an act of memory into an act of reading.

Two things to get right. Create the branch yourself and hand the bot the branch, rather than letting it create branches, so the review path is one you chose. And merge yourself, always, because merge is the step that makes the work real and it is exactly the kind of irreversible action an approval prompt does not undo. The documentation is explicit that an approval controls the proposed action and does not reverse work already completed (approvals, security and privacy), which is the same reasoning laid out in approval rules and reversibility.

If branching is not available on your plan, the substitute is a duplicate of the file, worked on by the bot, and a human copying the finished frames across. It is clumsier and it preserves the property that matters: the bot never has the canvas that other people are looking at.

Save a named version before the run, because autosave will not label itself

Version history is your only undo, so make it usable before you need it rather than during the twenty minutes when you need it.

Figma saves versions automatically as people work, and those entries are a stream of timestamps. A named version is a labelled point you created on purpose, and it costs five seconds. Save one immediately before a bot run, name it with the date and the job, and restoring becomes a decision rather than an archaeology exercise.

Check what your plan actually keeps, as of writing free plans have limited version history retention while paid plans keep more, and a safety mechanism that expires after thirty days is not a safety mechanism for a monthly job.

One more property of restore worth internalising: it brings back the whole file. If the bot ran at nine and a colleague did good work at ten, restoring to half past eight throws away both. The practical move when a run goes wrong is often to restore into a duplicate, pull the correct frames across, and leave the live file alone.

Pick which of the three doors the bot comes through

How a bot reaches Figma sets the ceiling on what it can break, and this is a decision most people make by accident, by whichever route was easiest to set up.

The third row is the default when a bot operates a computer, and it is the least constrained option available. It is also the one with no attribution: the activity, the comments, and the version entries all carry your name, because the session is yours.

That is worse on a shared machine than it looks. All bots on a Grok Bot account share one persistent cloud computer, and browser cookies and signed-in sessions are shared across them, which the documentation states while warning directly against treating separate bots as a security boundary. A Figma session signed in by one bot is available to every bot on the account, and deleting the bot that signed in does not sign it out. If you go this route, prefer a separate Figma account with access to exactly the files in scope, so the blast radius is a membership list rather than your whole organisation.

Keep styles and variables out of reach until the mechanics are proven

Styles and variables look like small objects and behave like schema. A layer bound to a variable is holding a reference, and deleting the variable does not delete the layer, it detaches the binding and leaves a hard-coded value that no longer tracks anything.

Modes multiply this. A variable with light and dark modes is one object driving two appearances, so an edit that looks correct in the mode you are viewing can be wrong in the one you are not. A bot working in a file where only one mode is on screen has no reason to check the other.

The rule is a sequence rather than a ban. For the first month, the bot may read styles and variables and may apply them to layers it creates. It may not create, rename, delete, or rebind them anywhere. Promote that only after a month of runs where nothing needed repair, and promote one capability at a time.

Watch the failures that only show up at file scale

Three failures in a design file are invisible in a spot check and obvious in aggregate, and all three come from the file format rather than from the bot's judgment.

Fonts substitute silently. A file records the font by name, and if the machine opening it does not have that font, Figma substitutes. Text metrics change, line counts change, and a layout that fits on the designer's machine overflows on the bot's. Any bot that touches text needs the font question answered before its first run, and any report it writes should state which fonts were missing.

Auto layout redistributes. Changing the content inside an auto layout frame moves everything around it, so a bot pasting longer strings into forty cards does not produce forty cards with longer strings, it produces forty cards with different heights and a grid that no longer aligns.

Constraints resize. A frame resized by a bot moves its children according to constraints somebody set months ago, and the elements pinned to the wrong edge drift in a way that reads as sloppiness rather than as a mechanical result.

Write the boundary as four file operations it never performs

Boundaries stated as care get argued away by a helpful next step. Stated as operations they can be checked against the file.

The bot never publishes a library update. The bot never edits, renames, restructures, or detaches a main component. The bot never deletes a shared object, which means components, styles, and variables, including ones it thinks are unused. And the bot never posts a comment or changes a file's sharing settings, because both of those are externally visible: a comment notifies people and reads as your opinion, and a sharing change is a permission change made by a process rather than by you.

The fourth one is the one people leave off the list. A bot with a signed-in session can flip a file to anyone with the link in one click while trying to share its work with you, and that is a disclosure event with no undo worth the name.

Diagnose a broken run from what the file looks like afterwards

None of these announce themselves while the bot is working, and most of them look like success on the canvas.

Verify the setup by reading the version history entry it left

The check for this bot is not looking at the canvas, because the canvas is where these failures hide. It is opening version history after the first run and reading three things.

First, that your named checkpoint is there, immediately before the bot's work, so a restore is one click away. Second, that the entries produced during the run are attributed to an account that is not you. If they carry your name, the bot is operating your session, you have no attribution at all, and every future question of the form "who changed this" is unanswerable. Third, that the work landed on the branch and not on the main file, which takes two seconds to confirm and is the failure most likely to happen on a run where something else went wrong first.

Then run the destructive test on a throwaway file. Ask the bot to do something the charter forbids, such as publishing a library update, and confirm that it stops and names the operation rather than finding a route around it. A boundary you have never seen refuse is a boundary you are assuming.

Where a design bot stops being worth the review it costs

The rule that the bot works on a branch, edits only instances, and never publishes has an edge, and it is worth naming before you find it at 6pm.

Work that is genuinely library work does not fit. Renaming a component set, consolidating two overlapping components, restructuring a token collection: these are the jobs that would save the most time and they are precisely the ones where the file format punishes a mistake hardest. Do them with a person on a branch, with a named version saved first.

Work in a file with several people actively in it does not fit either, for a plain mechanical reason rather than an etiquette one. Their undo cannot reach the bot's changes any more than yours can, and they have not saved a checkpoint.

And there is a floor below which the review costs more than the work saved. If a job produces changes across five or six layers, checking it line by line takes longer than doing it. The jobs worth handing over are the ones with forty or more repetitions, where a per-layer report is faster to scan than the work would have been to perform.

Can a bot safely edit a Figma component?

It can safely edit an instance and it should never edit a main component. An instance edit becomes a local override and affects that one frame. How do I undo a change a bot made in a shared Figma file?

Not with undo. The undo stack in a multiplayer editor is per person and only reverses your own actions, so pressing it does nothing to changes another participant made, and the bot is another participant. Version history is the real mechanism, and restoring brings the entire file back to a chosen moment, discarding anything anyone did after it. Should a bot publish a Figma library update?
