The bill that surprises people is almost never the plan. It is one bot with a five minute schedule that nobody turned off, quietly running two hundred eighty eight times a day and reading a large page each time.

That is a usage shape problem, not a pricing problem, and it is the part you can actually control.

Retries. A run that fails halfway and starts over costs what the failed attempt cost plus what the successful one costs. Flaky logins, rate limits, and ambiguous instructions all convert directly into repeat spend.

Long documents. A single sixty page PDF or a two hour transcript can cost more than a week of ordinary runs. This is not a reason to avoid them, it is a reason to know which of your bots eat them.

Why every five minutes is the most expensive mistake

Ask the honest question instead: what is the shortest delay that would actually change a decision you make? Two setups, same content, different clocks. Say a run reads one page and writes a short summary, so C + M + F + O comes to some fixed amount you can measure once.
