Grok Bot and X: Permissions and What to Automate
On every other tool in this series, the company hosting your automation and the company judging your automation are different. Google does not restrict your account because a bot drafted an email. GitHub does not suppress your repository because a bot labelled an issue.
X is not like that. The account your bot works in is the same account X evaluates, and the thing at risk is not a post, it is the handle, the follower graph, the direct messages, and whatever standing you have in a creator or monetisation programme. That asymmetry should decide the entire shape of your setup before you look at a single permission.
Whether a native X connector is available on your plan changes; confirm it in the app rather than trusting any article, including this one. If there is no connector, the fallbacks are the same as everywhere else: drive the web interface in a browser session you hand off after signing in yourself, or reach the platform through an MCP server. Both fallbacks matter here more than usual, for reasons covered below.
The platform you automate is also the one grading you
Think about who absorbs the cost of a mistake.
A bad Notion edit costs you a version history restore. A bad Slack message costs you a correction and some credibility inside a company that already employs you. A bad X post costs you the same correction, plus the possibility that the platform itself decides your account behaves like an automation farm.
The second cost is the one people do not price in, because it does not arrive as an error message. Enforcement on social platforms is frequently invisible: reach degrades, replies stop surfacing, an account goes under review, and you learn about it weeks later from an analytics dashboard that stopped making sense. You cannot debug a penalty you were never told about.
So the first design decision is not which permissions to grant. It is accepting that on X, the reversible work and the irreversible work are cleanly separable, and almost all of the value sits on the reversible side.
Sort every X action by whether it survives a delete
Before permissions, build the ledger. Every action a bot could take on X belongs in one of three columns, and the column decides who performs it.

The middle column is the one that reorganises this decision. On most tools the question is "can I undo it", and the answer is usually yes. On X the answer is that you can remove the artifact and not its effects, which means the delete button is a tidiness feature rather than an undo.
Everything in the top three rows can run unattended forever. Everything below them is a human action performed by a human, and the bot's job is to make that human faster, not to replace them.
Listening is the half of X that a bot is actually good at
Strip away publishing and there is still a lot left, and it is the part that takes you the most time by hand.
Reading X well is a research job: track twenty accounts in your niche, watch a handful of search terms, notice which formats got traction this week, catch the post where somebody described your category's problem better than you have, spot a customer complaining without tagging you, and compress all of it into something you read in four minutes instead of forty.
That job is high value, it recurs daily, and every part of it is a read. Nothing in it can embarrass you, because nothing in it leaves the account. The viral tweet scout in the catalog is built on exactly this shape, and its declared boundary is the whole point: it reads only, and never posts, likes, or replies from your account.
Drafting sits one step further out and is still safe, provided the draft lands somewhere private. A file, a note, a message to yourself. The X account crew works this way, producing drafts and reports where nothing posts or replies without you.
Grant public read, then decline everything else and see what breaks
Consent screens differ by product and change often, and exact permission names are not worth memorising. The families below are stable enough to plan against. Read the screen you are actually shown and match it to this list.

If a setup asks for posting or DM sending to build you a research digest, that is a mismatch, not a formality. Decline it and see whether the digest still works. It will.
Two habits make that decline stick. Grant one family, run the bot for a week, and add the next only when a real task failed for want of it, because a permission granted "in case" is a permission nobody revisits. And write down the date you granted each one next to what it was for, since the consent screen is the only place that information exists and it is not a place you can query.
Static datacenter IPs make automated posting look like automated posting

Grok Bot's cloud computer uses static egress IP addresses, and the documentation notes plainly that some services flag datacenter IP addresses. For a bot reading public pages, that is an occasional annoyance: a page refuses to load and you find another route. For a bot driving a logged-in session on a platform that actively polices automated behaviour, it is something else. A long-lived login being operated from a fixed datacenter address is the precise pattern that automation detection exists to notice.
Three properties of that address make it worse than a one-off signal. It is static, so it does not blend into a pool. It is shared, because all bots on your account share one persistent cloud computer, so every bot you own contributes to the same address's behaviour. And it is not yours, so you cannot reason about what else has ever come from it.
Two more facts from the same documentation compound this. Browser cookies and signed-in sessions are shared across every bot on that computer, and the documentation states directly that separate bots are not a security boundary. So the X session you sign in once is reachable by the bot you built to summarise your invoices, and deleting a bot does not remove the shared computer's files or browser sessions.
None of that is a scandal. It is a design constraint, and the correct response is to make sure the only thing that session is ever used for is reading.
Read the platform rules yourself, including the monetisation ones
This is the paragraph most guides replace with a shrug, and it deserves better.
Platforms distinguish between automation through their sanctioned interfaces and automation that drives a logged-in browser session, and they treat the two differently. They also run creator, partner, and revenue-sharing programmes with their own rules about authenticity, engagement quality, and automated activity. Falling foul of a programme rule can cost payouts or standing even where nothing gets suspended, and those terms change more often than anyone rereads them.
So do the boring thing: open the current automation rules and the terms of any monetisation programme your account is enrolled in, on the day you build this, and read what they say about automated posting, automated engagement, and third-party access. Check again when you widen what the bot touches. This is not legal advice, and the rules move.

Likes, follows, and replies are writes wearing a smaller coat
Posting is the write action everyone notices. X has several others that feel like nothing:
- A like is public. Automated likes on a schedule are a behavioural signature.
- A follow and unfollow cycle is the oldest growth-hack pattern there is, and platforms have been detecting it for over a decade.
- A reply is a post with someone else's audience attached, and it inherits their thread's context, which your bot did not read the way a human would.
- A block or mute changes a relationship silently and is discovered awkwardly.
- A profile edit changes what every visitor sees, including the link people click to buy from you.
Each of these is small individually. Collectively they are the difference between an account that reads as a person using tools and an account that reads as a tool using a person. Deny the engagement family and put the individual verbs in the charter anyway, because a permission you did not grant and a rule the bot follows are two different layers and you want both.
The reason the charter needs the verbs spelled out one by one, rather than a sentence like "do not engage", is that a bot given a goal will find a route to it. "Do not engage" leaves bookmarking, list-adding, and following ambiguous. A list of thirteen named verbs leaves nothing to interpret, and a model that cannot find a permitted route reports the failure, which is the outcome you wanted.

That last block is not decoration. X is an open network of strangers who can put text in front of your bot on purpose, which makes it the highest injection-risk surface any of these bots will touch.

Five ways an X bot goes wrong, and what shows up first
Every row here is something that happens while the bot is behaving exactly as instructed, which is why none of them announce themselves.

The first row is the most common failure and the least dramatic. A research bot that produces a brief you have stopped reading is not a safe bot, it is a pointless one, and the fix is editorial rather than technical.
Prove the bot never acted, instead of trusting that it did not
A charter is an instruction, not a guarantee, and the hosted runtime cannot help you here: the documentation notes that an audit view of Bot actions does not exist yet. So the verification has to come from the platform side, which is fine, because the platform side is where the evidence lives anyway.
Run this once a week for the first month, then monthly.

Two of those rows deserve a note. The following count is the single best canary, because it is one number, it should be flat between your own actions, and any movement is unambiguous. And the connected apps check catches the case that has nothing to do with your charter: a permission granted months ago by a setup you abandoned.
The check has to be able to fail for it to be worth running, so record the numbers rather than glancing at them. Write down the follow count and the like count each week. A glance confirms what you expect; a recorded number catches what you did not.
An account-level penalty has no partial credit
Every tool in this series has one action you cannot walk back. On X it is not a single action, it is a category: anything that changes how the platform classifies your account.
Delete a bad post and the post is gone, but the impressions happened, the screenshots exist, and if the post triggered a strike, deleting it does not retract the strike. Reverse an automated follow spree and the pattern is still in the record. Lose an account and you lose the handle, which somebody else can register, the follower graph, which does not transfer, the direct message history, and any monetisation standing that took months to earn.

An approval prompt is a gate in front of the next step, not an undo for the last one. Widening the bot without touching the publish button
There is a real progression here, and it does not end in autonomous posting.
Weeks one and two, read only. Watchlist, search terms, and mentions, compiled into a brief you actually open. Grade it on one question: did you stop opening the app to check? If not, the watchlist is wrong, not the model.
Week three, add drafts with sourcing. Require every claim in a draft to name the note it came from. This kills invented specifics, which are the failure mode in social drafting, because a concrete number improves any post and the model knows it.
Week four, add reply drafts. Your bot proposes replies to mentions; you read and send them yourself. This is where most of the daily time actually goes, and it is fully recoverable.
After that, the leash stops. The next step people want is scheduled publishing, and the honest answer is that it belongs in a scheduling tool the platform sanctions, released by a person who has read the room that morning. The objection: plenty of accounts automate posting and seem fine
The honest counter-argument is empirical. Automated posting is everywhere, visibly, and most of those accounts are not obviously suffering. If the risk were as sharp as this page implies, the timeline would look different.
Three things make that observation weaker than it appears, and none of them require knowing a single platform rule.
Survivorship. You are looking at the accounts that are still visible. An account whose reach quietly halved does not announce it, and an account that was suspended is not in your feed to be counted.
Attribution. Because enforcement on social platforms is frequently invisible, nobody who was penalised can tell you which behaviour caused it. The absence of reports is not evidence of the absence of penalties; it is what an unlabelled penalty looks like from outside.
Asymmetry. The upside of automated posting is time saved on a task that takes minutes. The downside is a handle, a follower graph, and a monetisation standing you cannot rebuild. Even at a low probability, that trade only makes sense if you value the minutes very highly.
Where the objection genuinely wins is scheduling, which is a different thing from autonomous posting. A human writes the post, a human approves it, and a sanctioned tool releases it at nine in the morning. That is a person using a timer, and nothing on this page argues against it.
Where read-only stops being the right answer
Read-and-draft is the right default and it is not the right answer everywhere. Three cases push against it, and each has a different correct move.
An account whose entire job is replying. A support handle exists to answer people, and a bot that only drafts leaves the actual work undone. The move here is not to let the bot send; it is to shorten the human step until approving a reply takes two seconds, which is a queue design problem rather than a permissions one.
A launch with a fixed time. When the post must go out at a specific minute and you will be in the air, the answer is a sanctioned scheduling tool holding copy you already approved, not a bot with posting rights standing by.
A second account you genuinely do not mind losing. Testing automation on a throwaway handle is legitimate, and it is worth saying out loud that this is the only context where the risk calculus changes, because the asset at risk is worth nothing to you.
