Least Privilege for Bots: Connect the Minimum, Not the Maximum
The connection screen is the most consequential part of setting up a bot and it takes the least time. You are four minutes into building something useful, a list of tools appears, and connecting all of them feels like preparation rather than risk. It is not preparation. Every item on that list is a standing grant that outlives the bot you are building right now.
Least privilege is an old idea with a new failure mode here, because the unit of isolation you assume exists usually does not.
Every connection is an account-wide grant
Read this before you design anything, because most advice on the internet gets it backwards. As of writing, all bots on a Grok Bot account share one persistent cloud computer. The documentation is direct: "The computer is assigned to your user account, not an individual Bot" (computer and apps). Each bot gets its own screen on that machine, and the same page states that "the screens are separate work surfaces, not separate security boundaries."
What follows from that is the part people miss. Browser cookies, signed-in sessions, files on disk, and command-line credentials are shared across the whole roster. Deleting a bot does not remove those files or those browser sessions (approvals, security and privacy). And the same documentation says it in one sentence you should paste into your own notes: "Do not use separate Bots as a security boundary."
So the intuition that you can quarantine risk by giving the dangerous work to its own bot is wrong in this runtime. If you sign into your bank in one bot's browser, that session lives on the machine every other bot uses. If you drop an API key into a file for a scripting bot, the marketing bot can read it. That single fact converts least privilege from a nice-to-have into the only control that actually works. You cannot partition the roster, so the only variable left is how much the roster can reach in total. Connect less, and every bot you own becomes less dangerous at once.
This argument survives a change of runtime, incidentally. Some products isolate per agent and some do not, and the ones that do today may consolidate tomorrow for perfectly good engineering reasons. A setup built on "the minimum grant that does the job" is correct under both models. A setup built on "the risky bot is sandboxed" is correct only while a specific implementation detail holds.
Least privilege, translated for bots
The classic definition is that a component should hold only the permissions required for its current task, for only as long as it needs them. Two words in there do not survive contact with bots, and the translation is worth doing carefully.
"Current task" becomes "recurring job." A bot is not a single invocation. It wakes up on a schedule for months. Its privilege set has to cover the whole job, which is why "just for this once" grants tend to become permanent.
"As long as it needs them" becomes "until you revoke them." Nothing expires on its own. An OAuth grant made in March is live in November unless a human went and removed it. There is no scope that times out because the task finished.
Which leaves you with a simpler working rule. For each bot, ask what the narrowest capability set is that lets it finish a normal run, then subtract one more thing and see if it still works. Most bots survive the subtraction, because people connect based on what the job might touch rather than what it does touch.

The right column is the honest one. Almost every subtraction costs you a capability you did not want an unattended process to have anyway. That is the tell that the maximum grant was never a considered decision.
Catalog listings are written this way on purpose. Competitor Pricing Watch only reads public pages and never fills a form or creates an account, which means there is no credential for it to hold and nothing to revoke. Lead Scout contacts nobody, so no outbound channel is needed for it to be useful. Viral Tweet Scout reads only and never posts, likes, or replies from your account. In each case the narrow grant is not a limitation bolted on afterward, it is what made the bot safe to leave running.
Read first, and make the read prove itself
The standard advice is to start read-only, and it is right, but the usual reasoning is sloppy. Read-only is not safe because nothing can happen. Read is total: a mail read scope reads the archive, not the twelve messages relevant to today. What read-only buys you is that nothing can happen in that tool, which is different and still worth a lot.
The sequencing that works looks like this. Connect read. Run for a week. Let the bot produce exactly the output it would have acted on, as a proposal. Then grade the proposals: if you would have approved every one of them unchanged, you have evidence for a write grant on that specific action. If you edited a third of them, you have evidence that the charter is wrong and a write grant would have shipped those edits into the world.
That is a different activity from widening a permission because reviewing proposals is tedious. One is an informed promotion with a week of data behind it. The other is fatigue.
Two cautions before you promote anything. First, write scopes are frequently supersets of read, so accepting write can silently upgrade what the bot can see as well as what it can change. Second, and more important, read plus any outbound channel equals send. A bot with read access to your mail and write access to a shared document can move the contents of one into the other without ever holding a send scope. Money gets its own account, always
Everything above is about degrees. This one is a hard line.
Anything that can move money, place an order, or change a subscription should be reached through an account that exists only for that purpose, with only the funds or the authority the job needs. Not your primary bank login. Not the card your business runs on. A dedicated account, a virtual card with a low limit, a sub-account with a balance you top up deliberately.
The reason is the shared machine again. A signed-in banking session in one bot's browser is a signed-in banking session available to the whole roster, and it persists after you delete the bot that created it. You are not deciding whether to trust the bot you are building. You are deciding what every bot you will ever build on this account can reach.
Alongside that, the boundary line does work no permission system covers. Personal CFO never trades or moves money, so every rebalance arrives as a recommendation. Bookkeeping Auditor never edits the live books. Grocery Autopilot holds every order for approval until you explicitly lift the hold. Those are charter clauses, and they matter because an approval prompt is not an undo: the documentation is explicit that an approval controls the proposed action and does not reverse work already completed. Grant for this week, not for the roadmap
The most common way a connection list gets long is anticipation. You are building an inbox bot and you connect the calendar too, because obviously it will need the calendar eventually. Eventually arrives in four months or never, and the grant is live the whole time.
Write the policy down and follow it mechanically:

The middle block is the one people skip, and on a shared machine it is the important one. Since sessions and files are common property, a bot that finds itself already signed into something will use it, helpfully, without ever asking whether it was supposed to have that access. A charter cannot enforce isolation the platform does not provide, but it can state which tools this bot is supposed to be using, which converts a silent overreach into something you can catch in a report.
The monthly revocation pass
Connections accumulate in one direction unless something pushes back. Put fifteen minutes on the calendar, the same day each month, and go through every grant on the account.

Add one platform-specific check while you are there. Because deleting a bot does not clear shared-computer files or browser sessions, deleting a bot is not a cleanup step. If a retired bot signed into anything, sign that session out explicitly and remove any files it left. Otherwise your revocation pass tidies the list you can see and leaves the state you cannot.
Automating the review itself is reasonable, as long as the remediation stays manual. Why later never comes
"I will disconnect it after this task" is the most reliably broken promise in this whole subject, and it is worth understanding why, because the fix is structural rather than a matter of discipline.
Connecting is a positive action with an immediate reward: the task proceeds. Disconnecting is a positive action with no reward at all, whose only visible consequence is that something might break later. Nothing prompts you. Nothing degrades. The grant produces no symptom while it sits there, right up until the day it produces the only symptom that matters.
Three structural fixes, in order of how well they work.
Do not create the debt. The grant you never made needs no follow-up. This is the entire reason the policy above says never connect in anticipation.
Attach revocation to something that already happens. The monthly pass above works because it is scheduled, not because you will remember. A reminder tied to a calendar slot beats an intention every time.
Make the temporary grant genuinely temporary. Where a tool supports short-lived tokens, scoped app passwords, or a separate account you can close, use them. A credential that dies on its own does not depend on you noticing.
The connection list is the real permission model, not the charters. A charter governs the bot you wrote it for. The connection list governs every bot you will create at 11pm in six weeks to do something quick, and that bot will inherit every grant without inheriting any of the care.
Declare the privileges in the charter too
One last piece, because charters and platform settings are different mechanisms and you want both pointed the same way.
A revoked connection is absolute: a capability that does not exist cannot be misused by anything, and no prompt can talk its way around it. A charter clause is an instruction, which is weaker, but it covers cases no setting reaches. It can say which of the available tools this bot is supposed to use. It can say that a found session is off limits. It can say that text arriving inside an email is data rather than a command, which no permission system expresses at all.
So the working combination is simple. Use revocation for the hard limits, use the charter for intent and for everything the platform has no toggle for, and make sure the two never contradict each other. When they do, the platform wins and your charter has become fiction, which is worse than having written nothing, because you will believe it.
