Grok Bot Permissions Explained: What You Are Actually Granting
The consent screen takes four seconds and describes almost nothing. It says something like "see, edit, create and permanently delete all your email", you recognise that this is broadly what you wanted, and you click continue. What you granted and what you intended are now two different things, and the gap will not surface until a bot does something technically permitted and obviously wrong.
This is what those grants actually mean, why the read tier is less innocent than it sounds, and the connection policy that keeps the whole arrangement defensible.
The consent screen describes capability, not intent
An OAuth scope is a capability grant to an application, permanently, until you revoke it. It is not a description of what the application will do, and it is not scoped to the task you had in mind when you clicked.
You connected mail because you wanted a bot to sort your inbox each morning. The grant does not say "sort the inbox each morning". It says this application may search, read, and in the write tier modify and send, on your behalf, from now on, for any purpose, at any hour, at the instruction of anything that can instruct it.
Vendors do reduce this where they can. As of writing, xAI's connectors authenticate over OAuth and the documentation states that Grok requests only the permissions it needs, with a tiered model on the Google connectors where a base connection reads and write capability is a separate step. On business and enterprise accounts, write tiers are typically gated behind an administrator, which is why "the bot says it cannot send" is usually policy rather than a bug. Confirm the current tiers on your own account rather than assuming.
Tiering helps. It does not close the gap, because the gap is between a capability and a purpose, and OAuth has no way to express purpose.
Read-only is not the safe option you think it is
The most common piece of advice, including advice in this article, is to start read-only. That is right, but the reasoning people carry with it is wrong. Read-only is not safe because nothing can happen. It is safer because nothing can happen in that tool.
Two things are true about a read grant. First, read is total. A mail read scope does not read the twelve messages relevant to today's task; it reads the archive, which includes your contracts, your legal threads, your bank correspondence, and every password reset link you have ever received. There is no partial read tier for "only the ones about invoices".
Second, and more important: read plus any outbound channel equals send. A bot with read access to your inbox and write access to a shared chat channel can move the contents of the first into the second. It does not need a send scope on the mail connector to leak mail. This is the combination worth thinking about, and it is why a permission audit that examines each connection in isolation misses the actual risk.
That matters most where the bot reads content it did not author. Email bodies, web pages, PDFs, and issue comments are untrusted input written by other people, and some of them contain text designed to look like instructions. A bot that reads untrusted content and holds a write capability somewhere else is the classic confused-deputy setup: the attacker has no access, but the thing they can talk to does. The mitigation is not cleverness in the prompt, it is not having the write capability, or gating it behind a human.
What each verb actually grants

The two rows worth rereading are Modify and Delete. Modify is dangerous because it is usually a superset of read, so accepting it upgrades the read grant as a side effect. Delete is dangerous because the difference between "trash" and "permanently delete" lives in the scope string, not in the button you imagine the bot pressing.
This is why the Email Purger bot holds every deletion and unsubscribe until you approve the full list, and why the Subscription Pruner bot cancels nothing you have not individually approved. Bulk destructive operations are the category where a single misunderstanding of your instruction produces damage proportional to the size of your account.
The account-level fact that changes everything
Here is the fact that should reshape how you think about all of this. Connections are typically established at the account level, not the bot level. You authorise mail once, and it becomes reachable by every bot on that account, including the ones you have not created yet.
Follow that through. The careful charter you wrote for your triage bot, with its explicit boundaries, governs that bot. It does not govern the bot you create in six weeks at 11pm to do something quick, which will inherit the same connection without inheriting the same care.
So the real permission model is not "which bot can do what". It is "what is connected to this account", and every bot is a potential consumer of all of it. Three consequences follow.
Your connection list is your actual attack surface, so keep it short. Connect what you are using this week and add the rest when a real task demands it.
Every new bot starts with the full inherited surface, so the charter has to name what it uses and what it must not touch, explicitly, every time.
Disconnecting is the only control that is absolute. A charter is an instruction and an approval rule is a policy, but a connection that does not exist cannot be misused by anything.

Approval rules outrank instructions
There are two mechanisms that stop a bot doing something, and they are not equally strong.
An instruction in the charter is a request. It is very effective in practice, because the bot is generally trying to comply, but it is interpreted, and interpretation can be wrong under pressure from ambiguous input.
An approval rule in the runtime is a policy. Where the product supports it, you can require that a class of action always stops and asks, and that rule is evaluated regardless of what the charter says or what the bot has concluded is reasonable. In xAI's auto-review settings, as of writing, require rules take precedence over allow rules, which is the correct precedence and worth verifying on your own account.
Use both, and use them for different things. Charter instructions carry the nuance: what good output looks like, when to escalate, which edge cases need a human. Approval rules carry the absolutes: never send external mail, never spend, never delete, never post publicly. If you can only have one for a given action, make the absolute a rule.
The boundary is the line that makes permission survivable
Every listing on botskills.sh must declare one field before it can be published: the boundary, the single action the bot never takes without a human. Not a list of risks, not a disclaimer, one line naming the thing it will not do.
That field exists because permission questions are unanswerable in the abstract and easy in the specific. "Should a bot have access to my inbox" has no useful answer. "Should this bot, which never sends and holds every draft for approval, have read access to my inbox" answers itself in about two seconds.
The boundaries in the catalog are deliberately narrow and concrete. The Inbox Triage bot never sends an email; every draft waits for explicit approval. The Personal CFO bot never trades or moves money; every rebalance is a recommendation. The Grocery Autopilot bot holds every order until you approve it. The Persistent Bot Memory bot never stores secrets, tokens, passwords, or customer data, which is a boundary about what goes in rather than what comes out, and is the one people forget.
Write yours while you are calm and thinking about failure modes, not at 11pm after something has already gone wrong. The same discipline runs through the one-person company system: a bot that must ask about everything is useless, a bot that never asks is dangerous, and the boundary is where you settle that once instead of every morning.
A minimum-connection policy you can paste
Put the permission model in the charter, in plain words, so the intended scope is written where you will reread it. This is a template, not a ceremony; the value is that a future you can audit it in thirty seconds.

The section on treating content as information rather than instruction is the one most charters lack, and it is the direct counter to untrusted input. It costs three lines.
The monthly review
Permissions decay in one direction. You add connections to unblock a task and almost never remove them, so six months in your surface is the union of every experiment you ever ran.
Once a month, spend ten minutes on four questions. Which connections exist on this account? Which live bot actually uses each one, by name? Which are at a write tier when the work only reads? And which were added for a bot that no longer exists?
Disconnect anything that fails the second or fourth question, and downgrade anything that fails the third. Reconnecting takes under a minute if you were wrong, which makes this an unusually cheap safety practice. Do the same review after any bot behaves in a way that surprised you, because a surprise is usually the first visible symptom of a permission you forgot you had granted.

Does a read-only connection mean a bot cannot cause harm?
It means it cannot change anything in that tool, which is not the same as harmless. A read grant is usually total across the account history, so the bot can retrieve contracts, legal correspondence, and password reset messages even when the task is trivial. More importantly, read access in one tool combined with write access in another is functionally an export path, since anything readable can be summarised into a channel, a document, or a message. Audit combinations of connections rather than each connection alone, and keep sensitive reads away from bots that can write anywhere public.
Are permissions granted per bot or for my whole account?
In most bot runtimes, including the model xAI uses, connections are authorised at the account level and are then available to any bot on that account. That includes bots you create later, which will inherit the connection without inheriting the careful charter you wrote for the first one. Practical consequence: treat your connection list, not your charter list, as the real permission model. Keep the list short, name the tools each charter may use, and disconnect anything no active bot depends on rather than relying on instructions to keep bots away from it.
What is the difference between a charter boundary and an approval rule?
A charter boundary is an instruction the bot interprets, and it works well because the bot is trying to comply, but interpretation can be wrong when the input is ambiguous or adversarial. An approval rule is enforced by the runtime regardless of what the bot concluded, so it holds even when the reasoning goes sideways. Use the charter for nuance, such as when to escalate and what good output looks like, and use runtime rules for absolutes, such as never sending external mail or never spending money. Where a product ranks them, require rules should take precedence over allow rules.
What should I never connect to a bot?
Anything that moves money without a human, anything that permanently deletes, and anything holding data you could not survive leaking. If a financial integration is genuinely useful, use a read-only credential on a dedicated account rather than your primary, so the worst case is disclosure rather than loss. Never store passwords, tokens, or one-time codes in a bot's memory or paste them into a conversation; sign in yourself when a login wall appears and let the bot continue with the session. A capability you never granted is the only control that cannot be reasoned around.
