Grok Bot vs ChatGPT Agent: Computer Use Against Named Bots
A pricing page that changed at 05:00 does not care that ChatGPT can operate a browser. It cares whether a named worker still had the job after you went to bed.
Grok Bot vs ChatGPT Agent is that fork. Grok Bot is named bots on one persistent cloud computer assigned to your user account: screens, charters, routines. ChatGPT Agent, when OpenAI offered it as a consumer surface, was a computer-use session you started. Confirm Agent on OpenAI before you treat any recap, including this one, as a contract. The ChatGPT agent help article has opened by saying the agent is no longer available and pointing readers at ChatGPT Work and cloud browser, while later paragraphs on the same page still describe agent mode. Read the first paragraph, then confirm live.
This is not a remake of Grok Bot vs ChatGPT Work. That piece is Work as a task surface against Bot as a standing named worker. This piece is Agent as computer use against Bot as named teammates, screens, and routines. Persistence decides whether 05:00 still has an owner. If search still says Operator, use Grok Bot vs OpenAI Computer Use.
Separate ChatGPT Agent from ChatGPT Work before you compare anything
Search results mash ChatGPT names into one blob. Agent is not Work. Work is not Tasks. Operator is not a current website you can open.
Work, on pages OpenAI has published, is a task surface: a goal, a long job, a finished file. Agent, on pages that still document it, is computer use: ChatGPT operating a GUI or a virtual browser for a turn you started. Tasks is a scheduler that fires a conversation on a clock. Mixing the three into "ChatGPT can click, so it is a bot" will buy you the wrong object.
If the question is a pile of notes that should become a deck, you are in the Work article. If it is a weekday nag at 07:00, use Grok Bot vs ChatGPT Tasks. If it is five competitor sites at 05:00, still the same named worker on Thursday, you are here.
Treat ChatGPT Agent as a computer-use session you start
Do not staff Agent as a teammate. Staff it, if it still exists on your plan, as a session you begin. Confirm every Agent verb on OpenAI today. This page will not print Agent prices, rate limits, a virtual machine size, or a plan matrix as fact.
Even if the Agent name is gone, OpenAI still documents other computer-use shapes that are also sessions. Cloud browser is a session on supported public websites. Confirm credentials on Using cloud browser in ChatGPT. Computer Use in the desktop app, as learn.chatgpt.com currently describes it, can operate macOS or Windows GUIs during Work or Codex after a plugin and OS permissions. On Windows, that page currently says it takes the foreground. The API computer tool is a harness you run. None of those is a named bot on an xAI account computer.
Treat Grok Bot as named teammates sitting on one shared computer
A Grok bot is a named role with a charter, a screen, and optional routines. The computer is assigned to your user account, not to an individual bot. All bots share one persistent cloud computer. Screens are work surfaces, not security boundaries. The docs say not to use separate bots as a security boundary. Cookies, sessions, files, and command-line credentials are common to every bot. Deleting a bot does not remove those files or browser sessions. Routines die with the bot. The desk does not. Read What Is a Grok Bot? and One Computer, Many Screens rather than inferring a private VM from two names.
The computer is a managed Linux VM. The bot runs as a non-root user. That is not a Linux desktop client. Grok Bot supports macOS (Apple silicon and Intel), Windows (x64 and Arm64), and iPhone on iOS 18 or later. There are Linux desktop and Android apps as of September 2026, and the iOS app also runs on iPad (iPadOS 18 or later). See supported platforms.
A routine assigns a workflow to one bot. Max 50 routines per bot. The app keeps 20 most recent run records per routine. Deleting a bot deletes its routines. Nothing is team-level. From the phone app (iPhone or Android) you can approve steps and pause or resume a routine, but not edit it. Schedule it as in How to Schedule a Grok Bot Routine. Group chat is not a wall.
Pick the product by persistence, not by who can click a browser
Both products can touch a page. That overlap is why this search exists. Line them up as shapes.
| Decision | Grok Bot | ChatGPT Agent (confirm live) |
|---|---|---|
| What you create | A named bot, a screen, optional routines | A computer-use session you start, if Agent is still offered |
| What exists next Tuesday | The bot, its screen, the shared computer | A chat and artefacts if kept. Not a named teammate unless OpenAI ships that |
| Where the browser lives | One persistent cloud computer for the account | Confirm: virtual browser, cloud browser, your desktop, or a harness you run |
| Deleting the worker | Routines die. Files and sessions remain | Confirm what a finished session leaves behind |
| Overnight watch | A routine can fire after the lid closes | A session you did not start does not run. Confirm any scheduler on OpenAI |
| Who owns 05:00 | The bot you assigned the routine to | You, unless a different ChatGPT surface is on a clock |
Persistence decides whether you are staffing a role or running a click-through. Isolation decides whether a second name is a second security domain. On Grok Bot, it is not.
| Job | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Click a checkout UI once to reproduce a bug | A ChatGPT computer-use session (confirm the live surface on OpenAI) | The job ends when you have seen the screen |
| Watch five competitor pricing pages every weekday at 05:00 | Grok Bot | The role has to exist while you sleep |
| One teardown of a rival page this afternoon | A session you start is enough | When the note is done, the worker can vanish |
| Standing scout that never contacts the rival | Grok Bot | Same folder, same refusal, same desk |
| Drive the Windows desktop in front of you while you watch | OpenAI Computer Use as currently documented | Your machine. Windows docs currently say foreground. Confirm live |
| Two watchers who cannot see each other's logins | Neither, on one Grok Bot account | Split accounts, not bot names |
If two rows fight, persistence wins.
Run an overnight competitor check through both shapes
Use one job both products can pretend to cover: overnight competitor check.
You care about five rivals. For each, you want the public pricing page, changelog or release notes, and careers page. You want a one-page internal brief at 05:00 Europe/London, with sources. You never publish. You never email the rival. Filter quality belongs in How to Build a Grok Bot That Can Monitor Competitors. This comparison is who still owns the clock.
| Clock | ChatGPT Agent shaped attempt (confirm live) | Named Grok bot attempt |
|---|---|---|
| 23:10 | You start a computer-use session, click five pricing pages, paste a note | Competitor Desk already exists. You open last night's file |
| 23:40 | The session ends. Nothing owns 05:00 unless OpenAI currently schedules that surface | A routine is assigned to this bot, not to the team |
| 05:00 | Nothing runs unless you left a different ChatGPT surface on a clock | The routine fires on the shared cloud computer |
| 05:12 | You are asleep. No named worker | The bot writes /watch/YYYY-MM-DD.md |
| 07:00 | You open ChatGPT and start again | The brief is on the desk. The laptop was closed |
| Next Tuesday | You remember how you asked, or you do not | Same bot, same stop line, last week's file |
The 05:00 row is the product. A session at 23:10 can be excellent at clicking. It does not become a hire because the clicks were good. A named bot keeps last night's file. A session does not.
If the page sits behind a login, do not assume Agent or cloud browser can sign in. Confirm credential rules on OpenAI. Grok Bot can hold a signed-in session because you signed in on that computer. That is also the blast radius. A Lead Scout that may only research still sits on the same machine as whatever else you staffed.
Assign the watch to one Bot with a routine, not to a session you might start
A named bot without a stop line is a computer-use session with a longer memory and a wider blast radius. Paste a charter before you connect anything.
You are Competitor Desk.
WHAT YOU OWN
Every weekday at 05:00 Europe/London, check these public pages for
each name in /watch/rivals.md: pricing, changelog or release notes,
and careers. Write /watch/YYYY-MM-DD.md and copy it to
/watch/latest.md. Diff against yesterday's /watch/latest.md.
WHAT GOOD LOOKS LIKE
Four sections: prices that moved with old and new figures,
changelog items that are not cookie-banner noise, careers roles
that imply a new product bet, and open questions. Every claim has
a URL. If a page fails to load, write BLOCKED with the URL and
stop that rival. Do not invent a price from memory.
WHERE YOU STOP
Never publish. Never email a rival. Never submit a form on their
site. Never create, update, or delete CRM records. Never send
Slack except the internal file path to me. If a login expired,
write BLOCKED and stop. Do not guess.
IF YOU ARE UNSURE
Ask me. Waiting is correct. Inventing a repositioning is not.
That charter is pointless on a one-off Agent session. It is the whole product on a bot you intend to leave running. Competitor Desk never publishes and never contacts the rival. Chief of Staff Briefing never distributes. Inbox Triage never sends. Write the verb you are afraid of, then keep the bot off that verb.
Assign the routine to this bot only. Max 50 routines. The app keeps 20 recent run records. Delete Competitor Desk and the 05:00 job dies. Signed-in sessions on the shared computer do not. Rotate those yourself. Scheduling traps: How to Schedule a Grok Bot Routine. Closed lid: Grok Bot With the Laptop Closed. Teach-by-demonstration captures a browser walkthrough for up to ten minutes, no microphone, draft skill, browser only, unavailable on iPhone. Individual accounts and self-serve Teams still have no audit view of Bot actions; Enterprise has audit logs and Action Recording.
Count blast radius in cookies and files, never in a session name
The expensive mistake is staffing three Grok bots and believing you bought three computers. You bought three screens. The vendor portal login and the cookies are account-wide.
On Grok Bot, Competitor Desk and Inbox Triage share the machine. Naming does not partition credentials. Deleting Competitor Desk after a scare does not log Inbox Triage out. Prefer read-only where the job only reads. Put money and publishing on a different account from research. Write the stop line before you paste a login. When a bot is done, rotate the sessions yourself. Least privilege is the method. The safety checklist is the pre-flight.
On ChatGPT Agent, or cloud browser, or desktop Computer Use, the blast radius is whatever that session is allowed to touch. Confirm that list on OpenAI. Desktop Computer Use docs currently warn that ChatGPT can view screen content, screenshots, and clipboard state, and that pages can contain malicious content. Stay present for payments and credentials. Hosted MCP sign-in tokens on the Grok Bot side stay with Cursor's backend, not on the computer. A browser login is not that exception.
Confirm every Agent claim on OpenAI pages before you budget
This page hedges on purpose. OpenAI has moved labels on this family more than once. Agent's help article has said Agent is gone while still documenting Agent. Cloud browser launched with public-page limits. Computer Use in the desktop app is a plugin with OS permissions.
Re-open the OpenAI pages already linked above the day you buy. If a recap still shows operator.chatgpt.com, treat it as history. If a table gives ChatGPT a dedicated VM per chat, demand a URL from OpenAI. This article will not invent that VM.
Grok Bot facts were rechecked against xAI and Cursor docs on 23 September 2026: FAQ and computer and apps. Beta launched 11 August 2026. Eligibility widened 21 August 2026.
Compare cost shape without inventing ChatGPT Agent prices
Look at the bills you can document. Leave Agent's bill on OpenAI's site.
| Path | Grok Bot included? | What to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Cursor Hobby | No | Free Cursor does not include the bot runtime |
| Cursor Pro at 20 dollars a month | Yes | Cheapest paid path, checked 23 September 2026 |
| Cursor Pro+ at 60 dollars a month | Yes | More weekly usage than Pro |
| SuperGrok (individual) | Yes, by linking | Link it from the Grok Bot plan screen; it grants usage and is not a Cursor plan |
| SuperGrok Plus | Yes, by linking | Never stacks with a Cursor plan |
| SuperGrok Heavy, Cursor Ultra, Cursor Teams, one-time trial | Eligible | Confirm live prices. Do not trust a viral 300 dollar Heavy figure |
| ChatGPT Agent | Confirm on OpenAI's pages | Do not invent a dollar figure, a credit pack, or a VM surcharge |
There is no Grok Bot-specific spend cap, but the account-level On-demand monthly limit applies. Weekly allowance, then on-demand from model and token cost. No published dollar figure for the allowance. Never invent one. No model picker. If both a Cursor and a SuperGrok subscription are present, Grok Bot uses whichever has more usage. Arithmetic: Grok Bot Cost and spend cap and token burn.
ChatGPT Agent may be cheaper to start, or gone, or bundled into a plan you already pay for. Confirm that the day you subscribe. A lower entry price is a good reason to run a one-off click-through in ChatGPT. It is a bad reason to staff a standing 05:00 watch on a session. Model Grok Bot as 20 dollars on Cursor Pro (or 60 on Pro+, 200 on Ultra, or a Teams seat) plus overflow up to the On-demand monthly limit you set. See Grok Bot free trial.
Refuse the dedicated virtual machine story for ChatGPT
Roundups want a tidy picture: Grok Bot has a cloud computer, ChatGPT Agent has a cloud computer, pick the brand. That picture invents hardware OpenAI has not asked you to treat as a standing VM assigned to your user the way xAI assigns one computer to the account.
Do not assert that ChatGPT Agent gives you a dedicated virtual machine. OpenAI has described a virtual browser in older Agent copy, cloud browser as a product, and Computer Use as control of your Mac or Windows GUI. Those are sessions and surfaces. Confirm the current environment on OpenAI. If you need an isolated box you operate, that is the API computer tool plus a VM you run, not a ChatGPT setting this article will fabricate.
Grok Bot's computer is real and documented, and it is still the wrong picture if you heard that each bot gets a VM. One computer per account. Managed Linux VM. Non-root user. Screens, not sandboxes. Not a Linux desktop app. Deleting a bot does not delete the VM. There are Linux desktop and Android clients as of September 2026, and the iOS app also runs on iPad.
Name what still runs after you close the laptop
Overnight competitor check only makes sense after you name which computer is doing the work: the Grok Bot cloud box, the Mac or Windows box in front of you, or whatever environment a ChatGPT session is using tonight.
| Action | Where it runs | After you close the laptop |
|---|---|---|
| Grok Bot browse, files, connectors, a scheduled routine | Shared cloud computer | Continues. Closing the app or iPhone does not stop a background turn |
| Grok Bot command on your Mac or Windows files | Your local computer | Stops when that machine sleeps |
| Grok Bot send or publish with Require Approval | Cloud, gated | Waits for you. Sleep is not approval |
| ChatGPT Agent session you already started | Confirm on OpenAI | Do not assume it outlives the lid |
| ChatGPT Computer Use on Windows foreground, as currently documented | Your Windows desktop | Needs the device unlocked and the target app visible, per OpenAI |
| ChatGPT cloud browser or cloud Work | Confirm on OpenAI | Public writeups describe background continuation. Believe OpenAI the day you run it |
The first row is why a 05:00 routine can fire while the lid is shut. Desktop Computer Use on Windows currently reads as a session that occupies the machine you are looking at. Approvals on Grok Bot control the proposed action. They do not reverse work already completed. There is no audit view of Grok Bot actions outside Enterprise.
Name the surface before you rewrite the overnight prompt
When the week goes wrong, name the surface before you rewrite the prompt.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing ran at 05:00 on ChatGPT | You treated a session as a routine | Put the watch on a Grok Bot routine, or confirm a scheduler on OpenAI |
| Two Grok bots used the same vendor cookies | Shared computer, by design | Treat the account as one security domain |
| You deleted Competitor Desk and the rival portal is still signed in | Deletion does not wipe files or sessions | Rotate the session yourself |
| Cloud browser stopped on a login wall | Public-page limits as OpenAI has documented them | Confirm live. A standing signed-in desk is Grok Bot's shape |
| Grok Bot never appeared on your Linux laptop | An installer story from before September 2026 | There is a Linux desktop app as of September 2026 (.deb, .rpm, AppImage) |
| Windows Computer Use stole the pointer | Foreground use as currently documented | Confirm OpenAI. Use a second device if you need to keep working |
| On-demand charges after a heavy watch week | No per-Bot spend cap, only the account On-demand monthly limit | Review usage. Set the On-demand monthly limit before a heavy week |
| Thursday's brief cannot see Wednesday's file | You used a session, not a desk | Named bot plus a folder on the shared computer |
If the job is logging into a supplier portal every Monday, verify that any ChatGPT computer-use surface is allowed to do that today. Grok Bot can hold a session on the shared computer. Recover files from the shared computer if they remain after a bot is deleted. Routines will not remain.
Answer the objection that a computer-use session already watches competitors
The strongest case against this article is simple: if ChatGPT can click the same pricing page, naming a bot is costume. For a large class of jobs, that case wins.
It wins on the one-off. A rival launched a page this afternoon and you will never staff that watch: start a computer-use session (Agent if OpenAI still offers it, otherwise Work, cloud browser, or desktop Computer Use, confirmed live). Creating Competitor Desk for Thursday, then deleting it Friday, leaves the sessions.
It wins on friction. Opening ChatGPT is closer to continuing a chat than naming a bot and writing a charter. It also wins if you need to drive the machine in front of you. Desktop Computer Use, as OpenAI currently describes it, is for GUIs on this Mac or this Windows box. Grok Bot's cloud computer will not replace that desktop.
It loses when the name has to survive. Five rivals, 05:00, last night's file, a refusal to contact them: those are jobs whose value is that they keep existing with the same stop list. A session can imitate that if you are willing to be the memory every night. Most people are not. They skip a night, the prompt drifts, and a contact verb creeps back in.
It also loses when the job has to survive the lid. A Grok Bot routine on the shared computer can fire while you sleep. A Windows Computer Use session currently documented as foreground use cannot. Confirm any cloud continuation on OpenAI. If the question is desktop operator versus cloud teammate, that is Grok Bot vs Claude Cowork.
Keep computer-use sessions and named bots on different jobs
You can keep both. Stop using one object for the other object's job.
Keep ChatGPT computer use (Agent if it still exists on your plan, otherwise the live substitute OpenAI names) for work that wants a pair of hands on a GUI or a page, then wants to end. Confirm each session's permissions at the start. Do not invent a dedicated ChatGPT VM so the metaphor matches Grok Bot.
Keep Grok Bot for unfinished work that wants a name, a charter, a screen, a routine, and a desk that still has last night's file. Staff few bots. Connect few accounts. Write the verb that must never happen. Every bot shares the computer. Deletion is not cleanup. Overflow has no per-bot cap, only the account's On-demand monthly limit. There is a Linux desktop app as of September 2026 (.deb, .rpm or AppImage). The phone app (iPhone or Android) can pause the routine and approve steps but cannot edit it.
Use Work, not Agent, when the need is a long job that returns a file. Use Tasks, not Agent, when the need is a clock and a message. Use Bot when 05:00 still needs a named teammate. A computer-use session returns a screen you watched. A named bot is still there on Monday, on a shared computer whose blast radius you accepted on purpose.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is ChatGPT Agent the same thing as ChatGPT Work?
No. Work is a task surface inside ChatGPT for longer jobs that can return finished files. Agent, on the pages that still document it, is a computer-use session you start: operating a browser or a GUI for that turn. OpenAI's Agent help page has also said Agent is no longer available and pointed readers at Work and at cloud browser, so confirm both names live before you buy or migrate. The Work comparison on this site is a different article. This one is whether you need a named persistent bot or a session that can click.
Does ChatGPT Agent give you a dedicated virtual machine?
Do not assume that. This article will not invent a dedicated VM, a VM size, or a VM price for ChatGPT. OpenAI has described agent mode, a virtual browser in older copy, cloud browser, and Computer Use on your Mac or Windows desktop. Confirm the current environment on OpenAI's pages. Grok Bot does have one persistent cloud computer per account, a managed Linux VM where bots run as a non-root user, with a screen per bot. That computer is not a Linux desktop app, and it is not a private VM per bot.
Can a Grok Bot watch competitors overnight with the laptop closed?
Cloud work can. Grok Bot runs on a persistent cloud computer assigned to your user account. A routine assigned to one bot can fire while the laptop is shut, the app is closed, or the iPhone is in your pocket. Local-computer actions still need that machine awake. Sends, publishes, and purchases set to require approval still wait on you. Sleep is not an approval. Confirm the lid behaviour in the closed-laptop guide rather than treating every overnight job as unattended.
Is ChatGPT Agent cheaper than Grok Bot?
Grok Bot's cheapest paid path is Cursor Pro at 20 dollars a month. Every paid Cursor plan includes Grok Bot, from Cursor Pro at $20; Cursor Hobby, the free plan, does not, and an individual SuperGrok, SuperGrok Plus, SuperGrok Heavy or X Premium+ subscription can be linked instead. Cursor Teams include it. There is no Grok Bot-specific spend cap, but the account-level On-demand monthly limit applies: weekly allowance first, then on-demand up to that limit, with no published dollar figure for the allowance. ChatGPT Agent prices belong on OpenAI's pages. This article will not invent them. Confirm both the day you buy, including whether Agent still exists as a billed surface.
